Risk Management & Insurance
“The wonderful staff and academic advisors of the College of Business were also a great attribute to my successes here at MSU, and prepared me well in the transition from college to the workforce of America.”
  • Business Major: Risk Management & Insurance / Finance
  • Graduation Date: May 2015
  • Hometown: Clinton, MS
  • Current Position: Assistant Underwriter / Producer, Burns & Wilcox
  • On the Job: Burns & Wilcox is a wholesale/broker in the excess and surplus lines of the insurance industry. We are the go-to for all different types of insurance agencies who have trouble placing various risks for their clients. I underwrite the risk by shopping all our available markets to get the best rate for that agent and their client with the hard-to-place risk.
Why did you choose to attend MSU?

I ultimately chose MSU because all my great friends from high school were attending MSU, and I thought it would be an awesome experience. In which case, it was!

How did you pick your major?

I first came to MSU as an accounting major but quickly figured out that was not for me. I had a couple of family members in the insurance business, and after consulting with them, I thought it would be a great career choice. It proved to be a very wise decision!

How did the College of Business prepare you for your career?

The College of Business allowed me to get that extra edge when it came down to finding a job by offering so many extracurricular activities such as clubs, professional development seminars, and organizations for my particular major within the College of Business. I owe my job to Gamma Iota Sigma, the National Fraternity for Insurance and Risk Management at MSU, for all the opportunities and career options it allowed me to explore outside the state of Mississippi. The wonderful staff and academic advisors of the College of Business were also a great attribute to my successes here at MSU, and prepared me well in the transition from college to the workforce of America. I wouldn't be where I am today without all the help and support from Mississippi State's College of Business. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and do something you usually wouldn't think of yourself doing. You never know where it will land you someday. If it weren't for me doing that, I wouldn't be working in Dallas, Tex. for such a great company. The College of Business at Mississippi State will provide you with these great opportunities, it's your job to act on them. Best of luck and Go Dawgs!
